Bahn Journey Nr 5 & Nr 6: Way too early, but going well

Getting there, 2026-06-12

The main feature of this one was the really, really early start. I had to get up before 6 AM to catch my train at 07:59. Contrary to my normal habits, I did have an appointment on the day of the train journey. So I decided to go for an early start to have a Deutsche Bahn safety margin.

I got the chance to try something new from the Deutsche Bahn restaurant for breakfast: The antipasti plate. Can’t recommend. It comes in a plastic holder, not on a proper plate. Two pieces of “too cheesy” cheese, a couple of pieces of salami, a few crackers, some soggy olives and a dip. None of it of any quality. First time in quite a while that I got disappointed by Deutsche Bahn’s food offering.

For lunch, I tried another new thing, the burger with beef-bacon-onion-chutney. I’ve had better burgers, but it definitely wasn’t a bad burger. So good addition to the menu.

I’m overall liking DB’s attempts to add more variety to the Bordrestaurant’s menu.

Besides a few minutes of delay arriving at my destination, there were no issues. Besides the very early time. The things you do for old friends… 😉

Getting back, 2026-06-14

The journey back today was overshadowed by two things: First, I felt every single wheelbarrow of construction waste we removed from the house of a friend we helped with a renovation. Wisely, he found lots of destructive work for us to do. Second, a relatively mild hangover. I had my 20 year high school (German Abitur) reunion on Saturday. Overall a very pleasant day. But I’m pretty sure some of my former fellow students are regularly taking reinvigorating baths in the blood of the innocent to keep themselves looking a hell of a lot younger than I do.

But the trip itself was alright. A bit of delay arriving at my switchover, but my customary 20 minutes of switchover time was more than enough to compensate.
